Job Description

  • This position is responsible for performing, with minimal supervision, sheet metal repairs and installation on maritime vessels such as Navy Ships, Military Sealift Command ships, and commercial vessels.
  • Repairs and installation include shipboard and shop tasks required to plan, layout, fabrication, and assemble various sheet metal structures throughout the ship.
  • The position requires a comprehensive understanding of ship terminology, blueprint reading, measurements, and the ability to interpret job specifications and drawings.
  • The qualifications and general capabilities listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and ability desired by the shipyard.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Must comply with OSHA standards.
  • Arrive at the designated work site at the assigned time and end the shift as directed by the schedule and your supervisor.
  • Work shifts, and overtime as assigned.
  • Keeping the work area clean and safe at all times, especially at the end of the shift.
  • Complete daily work assignments and provide status of unfinished work for shift turnover.
  • Provide quality work and Objective Quality Evidence (OQE) as required by the work specifications or assigned by the supervisor.

  • Carry out written and verbal instructions.
  • Resolve unexpected events related to your assigned task in a professional manner.
  • Prepare the work area to a safe work environment, paying particular attention to the added requirements if hot work is required.
  • Accomplish operational tests on equipment that will be reinstalled and document results.
  • Conduct a preproduction inspection of the work site and submit the As-found condition report.
  • Measure, lay out, and mark structures to be removed using drawings, specifications, shop sketches, or direction from the structural supervisor.
  • Remove existing structures, furniture, and ventilation ducting as required by the drawings or specifications, or as directed by the supervisor.
  • Construct templates and fabricate replacement pieces.
  • Trim, file, grind, deburr, and buff surfaces with hand tools and power tools.
  • Weld, solder, bolt, rivet, screw, clip, caulk or otherwise bond components.
  • Install berthing equipment; galley equipment; ventilation ducting (heating and cooling); and joiner doors in accordance with drawings, specifications, and sketches.
  • Direct and monitor the activities of assigned helpers or improvers.
  • Run and remove lines and leads as required to accomplish work and in accordance with OSHA and BAE safety standards.
  • Accomplish Lock-out Tag-out for work being performed
  • Clean the work site at the end of the shift.
  • Must be able to comprehend instructions, drawings, and general correspondence.
  • Must have a comprehensive understanding of ship repair terminology and ship compartment location nomenclature.
  • Must be physically and medically capable of wearing all required personal protective equipment (PPE) required for the job as prescribed under OSHA standards. PPE includes hard hat, safety glasses, steel toe shoes, goggles, respirator, safety harness, safety line, flotation gear, etc.)
  • Must possess the ability to write comprehensive Condition Found Reports (CFR) describing the material condition of the ship as it pertains to the assigned work item and provide recommended corrective action.
  • Must be able to effectively confer job related information to the structural supervisor, improvers, and helpers.
  • Must be able to read and interpret structural drawings, sketches, and specifications.
  • Must be able to interpret appropriate sections of NAVSEA, ABS, Coast Guard standards and manufacturer’s tech manuals.
  • Must have experience repairing and installing shipboard habitability spaces including: berthing equipment; galley equipment; ventilation ducting (heating and cooling); and joiner doors in accordance with drawings, specifications, and sketches.
  • Must understand the principle of balancing air systems including taking proper readings and documenting the results.
  • Must have experience using hand and power tools and understand the operation of fabricating machines such as shears, brakes, presses, forming rolls and routers.
  • Must have experience tack welding using SMAW or GMAW.
  • Must be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Must understand the US customary and metric measurement systems.
  • Six (6) years of related experience, three (3) of which are in a shipyard environment, working on Navy vessels.
  • Must be DBIDs eligible, have OSHA 10 and fire watch, and be available to work day shift or night shift as needed.
