Job Description

The Rigger Shop First Class Mechanic performs a variety of skilled mechanical duties involving deck machinery, engine room work, electronic equipment, staging work, testing, steel/pipe work, general dock, rudders, shafting, wheel work, and anchor chain work.

The First Class Mechanic operates equipment for assembly and installation; performs preventative and predictive maintenance on facility machinery; records work performed and follows specified safety policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities & Functional Knowledge:

This list is representative of the key areas of responsibility and functional knowledge required of a first class mechanic in the rigger shop.

A first class mechanic must demonstrate an advanced knowledge of the skills, functional knowledge and abilities required to perform tasks in these and related areas of responsibility.

Advanced knowledge means that the mechanic understands how to perform tasks in these categories (including, but not limited to, the specific tasks identified below) and is able to complete them independently and has the ability to teach others how to complete the tasks.

This also means that the mechanic has the necessary level of knowledge of the equipment, protective gear, and machinery required to complete these tasks.

A first class mechanic also is expected to strategize independently and problem-solve as appropriate.

  • Anchor Chain Work
  • Wheel Work (Hubs/Blades/CCP System)
  • Fixed Wheel Work
  • Dry-Dock Related Shafting Work
  • Shaft Alley Related Shafting Work
  • Rudders (Fins)
  • Rudders (Stocks)
  • Deck Machinery Work (work with cranes and cargo booms)
  • Deck Machinery – Boat Davits
  • Deck Machinery – Accommodation Ladders
  • Deck Machinery – Stern Ramps
  • Deck Machinery – Winches (UNREP Station related, sliding pad eyes, mooring, etc.)
  • Routine Engine Room Work
  • Engine Room – Large Jobs
  • Non-Routine Engine Room Work
  • Main Engine/SSDG Overhaul Work
  • Electronic Equipment (including all CIC sensitive, all computers, all circuit breakers, all ac units, all cooling coils, all laundry and all galley equipment)
  • Staging Work
  • Testing
  • Steel/Pipe Related Work
    1. General Dock-Related Work
    2. Must be familiar with Hook-on (ship/pier)

Required Skills and Education

Minimum education: High school/GED

Minimum relevant experience: 5 to 7 yrs.

Practical Theory Requirements: A first class mechanic must demonstrate a developing understanding of naval vessel compartments, number systems and related vessel terminology for the CG, DDG, and LHD ships. Knowledge of job planning and executing, proper gear selection, leading other junior mechanics, helpers and handypersons with minimal supervision.

Other Requirements:

  • Must be able to read, write and comprehend simple instructions
  • Must be able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral or diagram form
  • Must be able to calculate and understand units of measure
  • Must be able to obtain a government access badge
