Job Description

To analyze, correct electrical problems, and to repair and overhaul electrical equipment and controls.

1st, 2nd and 3rd class levels are based on proficiency, knowledge, skills and abilities.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Construct components, sub-units and simple models; adapt standard equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and correct equipment malfunctions, performs planned preventive maintenance or assist with overhaul maintenance using diagnostic equipment for which training has been completed.
  • Work from blueprints, drawings, layouts, work orders or other specifications, performing work according to the latest revision of the National Electrical Code (NEC) or local jurisdictional authority.
  • Conduct basic tests which may require test equipment/set-ups or procedures as well as subjective judgement in measurements.
  • Be able to work safely with systems operating at levels not exceeding 480 volts (medium voltage).
  • Performs maintenance using oral and/or written instructions.
  • Perform troubleshooting/problem identification and resolution of a routine nature.
  • Respond to various types of emergencies and provide assistance as appropriate based on sills, knowledge, and ability.
  • Perform other site support tasks incidental to electrical maintenance assignments.
  • Recommend solutions to problems in design and field fit during facility construction and remodeling; perform field fit work when approved by the customer.
  • Perform maintenance using oral and/or written instructions.
  • Provide field design and specification of materials not included in engineers’ drawings and plans and provide “as-built” drawings at completion.
  • Plans details of working procedure by determining replacement needs or new material required and develops a logical approach to correct the problems.
  • Analyzes circuits, wiring diagrams and drawings to install, repair, service or replace electrical devices and system.
  • Receives wiring diagrams, specifications and instructions from supervisor covering emergency and scheduled repairs, installation, and electrical inspection work to be performed.
  • Performs work requiring a thorough knowledge of electrical theory and principles, statutory codes, properties of materials and principles of operation of electrical equipment.
  • Starts up and shuts down and in line with OSHA requirements.
  • Services electrical equipment by checking, testing, and replacing faulty components, circuits, printed circuit board, and similar electronic devices.
  • Installs, repairs, and maintains communication cables, power distribution cables, then splicing pieces as required.
  • Fabricates parts if not commercially available, using machine and hand tools common to the trade.
  • Determines need for, analyzes, and makes necessary running adjustments, repairs, and overhauls.
  • Advises and cautions operators and mechanics about potential electrical problems and inherent dangers involved.
  • Notifies Supervisor of potentially dangerous electrical equipment noted and corrective action taken.
  • May be part of a mechanic team on major installations, working with other trades such as machinist, pipefitters, etc.
  • May be called on to do temporary repairs or other work after normal working hours and on weekends.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities High school diploma or GED and specific training and thorough knowledge in the particular area of electrical maintenance and installation, plus a broad knowledge of other disciplines such as general math, geometry & electronics.

Work Environment

Work is regularly performed in outside weather conditions, including rain and extreme heat, near moving mechanical parts and includes occasional exposure to wet and/or humid conditions and to vibration.

Physical Demands

  • The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 70 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Position Type/ Expected Hours of Work

  • This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday.
  • This position periodically requires long hours and weekend work.
  • Regular and predictable on-site attendance is an essential function and a prerequisite to perform other essential functions of the position.

Travel

Travel is primarily local during the business day, although periodic out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be expected.

Required Education and Experience

  • High school degree or equivalent.
  • Preferred Education or Experience Education based on requirements that are job-related and consistent with the business necessity.
  • Experience in a Shipyard/ Military setting.
  • Recommend 5+ years’ experience.
  • Good written and spoken communication and analytical skills and a working knowledge of basic computer systems and software programs.
